The courses follow a structure outlined by Mike, whereby every coach knows his role and what drills, games to play on which days. The Skills Academy have given careful thought to every aspect of their football holiday courses.
"I would like children to grow up learning to respect each other's teams. Supporting their team shouldn’t be about hating others. I think children should learn to love their team but appreciate good football and good players even if they don’t play for their favourite team. For me, that is a true football fan" - Mike Delaney
The Skills Academy holiday courses are designed to feel different to other courses. They should be seen as a treat by children. It is therefore important that fun football games are included. Recent research has indicated that children’s attention span is greater in the morning and teaching should take this into account. Therefore, Skills Academy holiday clubs are full of technique based drills in the morning but in the afternoon the programme includes a fun football game followed by a ‘World cup tournament’. Games include: numbers game, football golf, football tennis, shooting game and football cricket.
Soccer Saturday
The Sessions held on Saturday mornings for children aged 5-12 years are especially useful for parents who like to pay weekly rather than booking onto block courses. All sessions at school venues run from 10 – 11.30am and are priced at just £4.00. Sessions at Bromley Mytime venues are priced at £4 (members) or £4.70 (non-members) and times vary (see upcoming courses section). The focus of these sessions, are more fun and game play activities. The slightly slower rate of technique progression allows children to drop in and out of sessions without missing so large a chunk of their development structure. It also caters for children’s taste, for example match play and goal scoring techniques are allotted more time, thus making these sessions more Child centred.
These sessions still incorporate a number of core technique drills before matches, to ensure that children are having regular practise of essential skills relating to match play.
A noticeable difference between the Saturday and After School programmes is that drills are often followed by a game, which involves the technique practised together with a shooting drill. For example, heading in pairs would progress into heading towards a goal to score. Without question, all children want to score and all parents want to see their child do the same.
After small-sided matches take place, a Penalty Shoot Out competition is held. This nurtures the child’s ability to deal with some minimal pressure whilst maintaining accurate technique. The winners of these competitions keep trophies for a week.
"The Skills Academy has been responsible for coaching both my 8 and 10 year old sons for a number of years in both the Saturday open sessions and the various holiday courses, which not only provides hours of fun, but also endows the kids with skills and techniques I had only seen previously in the professional game.
It is also wonderful to see the constant improvement and the occasions in competitive matches where the coaching really shines through. I am really impressed by all the coaches Jack and James have trained with. I have found them all to be extremely enthusiastic, caring, friendly, knowledgeable and above all professional. Keep up the excellent work!"
- Mr Barker, Parent, Bromley FC
